Rota Children's Museum is located in a restored traditional building in the centre of the old city of Nicosia and offers alternative ways of educating and entertaining children. It provides exhibits and programs to stimulate informal learning experiences for children. In contrast with traditional museums that typically have a hands-off policy regarding exhibits, the children's museum features interactive exhibits that are designed to be manipulated by children. The theory behind such exhibits is that activity and direct experiences can be as educational as instruction, especially in early childhood.
The Museum is addressed to children from 4 to 12 years old, parents and educators. It gives life to the exhibitions for school groups with the help of museum animators. It creates activities and workshops which encourage self-knowledge and communication between children and adults through play. It holds seminars for adults.
The first exhibition presented ‘Treasures within me’ was designed by the Children’s Museum of Brussels, Belgium and hosted in the Children’s Museum of Emotions of Athens. This current exhibition encourages children to discover their emotional world, to learn more about themselves and others. Moreover, it sensitizes adults, parents and teachers on subjects which deal with the children’s emotional development and socialisation.
