The emblem of the Leventeio
The Leventis Municipal Museum's emblem presents the
outline of the city's Venetian Walls -star shaped with
11 bastions. Inside the walls one can observe the outline
of the gate at the Museum's entrance, also symbolising
the gate one opens in order to gain entrance to the
city's history.
Welcome to the Leventis Municipal Museum
of Nicosia
Welcome to Nicosia's Leventis Municipal Museum!
You are in a stone-made neo-classical mansion in the
Trypiotis parish, one of the most significant parishes
of the old city.
This house was constructed in 1885 and for many years
it functioned as the residence and the clinic of the
Doctor -and Mayor of the city for 27 years -Themistoklis
Dervi. Today it houses the historical Museum of Nicosia,
that is, the Lenventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia.
The Concept
In 1984, the Mayor of Nicosia Mr. Lellos Demetriades
had an idea about creating a historical Museum during
a time when the Municipality of Nicosia was starting
a wide plan for the preservation and revitalisation
of the "within-the-walls" historical core
of Nicosia.
The Sponsor
In 1984, after an agreement between the Mayor of Nicosia
and the Anastasios G. Leventis Foundation, a decision
was taken to institute the Historical Museum of Nicosia.
The Anastasios G Leventis Foundation readily responded
to a request by the Nicosia municipality, buying an
old mansion in Nicosia and assuming the expenses for
its re-erection.
1989
The Municipality of Nicosia assumed the responsibility
of manning and operating the Museum, which would present
the capital's history. The Museum, under the name "Leventis
Municipal Museum of Nicosia" in honour of its sponsor,
opened its gates on the 20th of April 1989.
Ever since 1989, the Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia
operates aiming to promote the history of Nicosia and
also of Cyprus in general. It pursues that goal through
its permanent exhibition areas, the enrichment of its
collections, the educational programs, the periodic
exhibitions, lectures, seminars, and other events. In
1991 the Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia was declared
European Museum of the Year.
