Leventio Municipal Museum

• The Friends' Association
In order to achieve the Museum's purpose and -especially -to inform the public for the foundation and future operation of a Historical Museum, lectures, special seminars, and exhibitions had to be -and eventually were -organised, as well as creating the Association of Friends of the Museum in 1986.
The Association of Friends of the Museum was instituted by a group of Nicosia's inhabitants who believed in the need to create and set up the Historical Museum of Nicosia. The goal of the Association is to assist, promote, and reinforce all the efforts of the Anastasios G. Leventis Foundation and the Nicosia Municipality in establishing the first historical museum of Cyprus, the Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia. Twelve years after its establishment, the Association has developed a variety of activities that aid-on the one hand -the promotion of the Museum and -on the other -the collection of funds for the purchase of items to the enrichment of the Museum. The Association actively contributes to the operation of Educational Programs, both through the voluntary work of its members as well as through the hiring of a person that attends the school visits and the Educational Programs' Cycles. The first Chairman of the Friends' Association was the entrepreneur Ioannis Christofides. Today it’s the attorney Constantinos Aimilianides.

18th of May / International Museums' Day
Every year on the 18th of May, which is the International Museums' Day, the Association organises a series of events. Sales of books and antiques or even food within the Museum's premises, musical and other special events are prepared by the Association for the 18th of May, creating in this way a tradition, an annual institution that promotes the Museum and brings it closer to the public. It is also a founding member of Cyprus's Federation of Friends of Museums, mainly operating for the purpose of promoting Cyprus and its museums abroad.

The Shop
The shop's operation is one of the Association's most important activities. With the aid of the association's members, series of items have been selected and are sold in the shop along with other small items and souvenirs. The profits from the sales are redirected to the educational programs and the Museum's enrichment.
The shop offers special accommodations and prices to companies, organisations, and to the members of the Association of Friends of the Museum.

Permanent Exhibition Areas
The halls of the Museum have been configured in such a way so as to host the items and other materials that represent and present the history of Nicosia from ancient times until today. Being guided and touring through the Museum are quite easy since the effort was made to have a special hall for each great historical period. The city's history was divided into five great unities. Modern Nicosia from 1960 until today, the British administration era 1878-1960, the Ottoman Years 1570-1878, the Byzantine and Medieval eras 325-1570, and the Ancient Nicosia 3000 BC until 325 AD. Representative items that are complemented by explanatory texts are presented in each unity. At the same time, the showcases and other structures differ from one unity to the other, since different representative colours have been chosen for each one. In the whole configuration and presentation of the museum, an effort was made and precautions were taken so that the showcases hosting the original items can be enriched without changing the rest of the configuration. The introduction to the Museum and the history of Nicosia, as well as informing the visitor that -after the museum -he / she can easily wander around in the old city and get better acquainted with its monuments and its areas, is done through a special audiovisuals program and a model of the city.
