In the context of the
wider effort to get foreign visitors better acquainted
with the old, "within-the-walls" part of the
city, the Nicosia Municipality established -since 1987
-a series of thematic walks. These walks are organised
so as to present various sides of living -both in the
"within-the-walls", old part of the city as
well as in the city outside the walls. A city like Nicosia,
with a history of 6,000 years, has many things to offer
to the visitor. Walking in the city, the visitor gets
to know its history of many centuries and its tradition
better, further understanding its constant cultural activity
and development. This is the philosophy upon which the
Walks in Nicosia are based. The
walks are offered by the Nicosia Municipality free of
charge and with the escort of tourist guides, organised
in co-operation with the Cyprus Tourism Organisation
and the Association of Tourist Guides.
The walks begin and end in the CTO's Information Centre
in "Laiki Geitonia" (Folkloric Neighbourhood
/ Barrio), Aristokyprou 11 (east of Eleftheria Square,
tel. 22 674264).
A qualified tourist guide receives the visitors and
escorts them in the walk. Throughout the entire year.
(In English)
Every walks lasts for about
2 hours and 45 minutes, including a 30 minute break
for refreshments. The participants in all the walks
should wear comfortable shoes and clothes. Hats / caps
are a must during the months of summer.
