The market of ‘Ochi’ is a held every Wednesday in the area of Bayraktar Mosque, on one of the 11 bastions of the Venetian walls of Lefkosia (Nicosia). It took its name from the Turkish word “bayrak”, which means the flag of war, because this was where the first Ottoman flag was raised when the city fell to the Ottomans in 1570. According to tradition the first standard - bearer (“bayraktar”) who entered the city was killed and buried on the spot. The farmers of Lefkosia (Nicosia) district gather here every Wednesday to sell their products, mostly vegetables and fruits.
