The Nicosia Municipal Theatre is a neoclassical building owned by the Nicosia Municipality, which has been a pillar of culture for Cyprus since the first performance held there on 26 March 1967. During its long history it has been hosting theatre and dance performances, concerts, historical and other events. The theatre has been the home for most of the productions of the Cyprus Theatre Organisation (THOC) from THOC’s inception up until 2008.
The most recent chapter in the theatre’s history commenced in June 2019 after the completion of the restoration works co-financed by the European Union Structural Funds. They are the result of an intensive effort by the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works, the Ministry of Education and Culture and the Nicosia Municipality, together with the competent services of the Department of Public Works, the Department of Electromechanical Services, the Cultural Services, the General Accounting Office and the General Directorate of European Programmes, Coordination and Development.
"Our goal was to create a cultural attraction for all our fellow citizens. A place that supports and highlights the creators, artists, and institutions of our city", hhighlights the Mayor of Nicosia, Constantinos Giorkatzis.
Since 2019, the theatre has been managed by Nicosia For Art, a subsidiary of the Nicosia Municipality, which is the heart and soul of the
Nicosia International Festival, a performing arts festival showcasing internationally renowned artists alongside emerging and established artists from Cyprus. Nicosia For Art also heads Nicosia's bid for the European Capital of Culture 2030.
