Just a few weeks before the Nicosia International Festival raises its curtain for its domestic and international performance program, the Parallel Program of the festival commences with the five-day Theatrical Workshop "Exploring Theater." The workshop will take place at the Nicosia Municipal Theater from August 28
th to September 1
st, 2023.
The Nicosia International Festival, the festival that never ends, actively participates in Nicosia’s bid for the European Capital of Culture in 2030. Audience development is a significant strategic goal for both the festival and the European Capital of Culture. During the five-day workshop, 40professions and with theater and education professionals, explore the stage and other facilities of the Nicosia Municipal Theater, engage with all theater related professions, and create their own theatrical performance from scratch.
More specifically, children will apply script writing techniques with themes drawn from the educational theater (STEAM - science, technology, engineering, arts, mathematics). They shall write their own play which they shall then direct and bring to life on the stage of the Nicosia Municipal Theater. They will design the lighting for their performance, compose their music written to their lyrics and design their own poster to promote their theatrical work. All in all a holistic theatre week full of theatre games and and improvisation.
The design and coordination of the theatrical workshop are undertaken by Yiannis Lazarou, a STEAM mathematics education teacher (Pan-Cyprian Gymnasium), and George G. Papageorgiou, the Artistic Director of the Nicosia International Festival. They are supported by a team of theater professionals: Andreas Michalopoulos (composer, pianist, and music teacher), Antony Papamichael (actor), Nicolas Prokopiou (sound engineer), Christos Charalambous (lighting designer), and Monica Hadjivasileiou (actor, scenographer).
