Cooperation between the University of Cyprus and the Nicosia International Festival on Charles Baudelaire on the occasion of the performance "The Flowers of Evil" by George K. Papageorgiou
On the occasion of the hosting of the performance "The Flowers of Evil" with music by George K. Papageorgiou, by the Nicosia International Festival that does not end... on Wednesday, February 21, 2024, and in the framework of the Festival's collaboration with the University of Cyprus, an open discussion with the audience is co-organized by Professor Dr. Mary Roussou.
The discussion will take place within the framework of the Parallel Programme of the Nicosia International Festival... which does not end at the Nicosia Municipal Theatre (3rd floor) at 19:00 and admission is free to the public.
"The Flowers of Evil - Les Fleurs du mal" by Charles Baudelaire is one of the most important works of world literature and the poetic masterpiece that definitively defined modern poetry. In this performance of contemporary scholarly music, dance and poetry, presented for the first time to a Cypriot audience, Baudelaire's iconic work acts as part of a wider artistic and psychological universe alongside the works of composer George Papageorgiou.
Dr. Mary Roussou was born in Athens. She is a graduate of the Greek-French School of the Ursuline Monks and a graduate of the Department of Classical Studies of the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Ioannina. She continued her studies at the University of Birmingham, England, where she obtained an MPhil degree from the Department of Byzantine, Ottoman, and Modern Greek Studies in 1990 and a PhD degree from the Department of English Literature of the same University in 2001.
He has published a book published in the Cyprus Centre for Scientific Research series entitled Victorian Travellers in Cyprus: a Garden of their Own, to 2002 and articles in journals, edited volumes and conference proceedings.
He has been teaching Modern Greek Literature at the Department of Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies, University of Cyprus since 2008. She was a research associate at the Postgraduate Program in Art History of the Cyprus University of Technology, Limassol, where she gave lectures and taught postgraduate seminars.
She collaborated in the research project Zephyros, a collaboration between the Sylvia Ioannou Foundation and the University of Cyprus, as a supervisor of a research group of students, for the transcription and digitization of travel texts in English. Her research interests include travel literature, comparative literature, literary theory, history of ideas, 19th and 20th century poetry and prose, and the relationship between literature and the visual arts.
