Eleftheria Square

DISCOVER THE CITY / Squares / Eleftheria Square
The project for the Regeneration of Eleftheria Square and its surroundings is designed to merge the modern city centre of the capital Nicosia with the neighbourhoods within the city walls in the most aesthetically pleasing and functional way.

The changes are part of the broader effort to develop the moat into an uninterrupted, unified area that will serve as an extended park running along the Venetian Walls. As well as highlighting the beauty of this impressive structure, these changes will encourage the public to enjoy the city’s most prominent and characteristic landmark in their everyday life.

The project involves the re-construction of Eleftheria Square as a bridge over the moat, the landscaping of the entire moat including the planting of a large number of trees, the installation of attractive water features, repair works on the Venetian Walls, the installation of an elevator and modern lighting, electromechanical work, the installation of street furniture, and the construction of shops and sanitary facilities.

The study and design of the project was undertaken by the world-renowned office of Zaha Hadid, the winners of a pan-European competition to determine the most suitable approach to significantly upgrading both the functionality and the aesthetic quality of this public area, in order to appreciate the role and value of this fascinating landmark.

The project was co-financed by the European Structural and Investment Fund, the Republic of Cyprus and the Municipality of Nicosia.
