Construction Section

The section is primarily responsible for construction and upkeep works for Municipality buildings as well as the construction and upkeep of the city’s infrastructures (roads, pedestrian pavements, rainwater sewers etc)

The chief competencies of the Construction Section are:

• Construction and upkeep of Municipality building works
• Construction and upkeep of road-works (pedestrian pavements, tarmac, rainwater sewers etc.)
• Monitoring of works carried out by public utility authorities
• Monitoring of dangerous buildings
• Monitoring of residences of the Chrysaliniotissa restoration project
• Monitoring of the construction of pedestrian pavements by private citizens/owners of buildings, and monitoring of road construction to ensure compliance with division permits.

Buttressing dangerous buildings within the Nicosia Municipality:

As part of a drive to preserve our traditional architectural heritage and at the same time ensure citizens’ safety, the Nicosia Municipality has decided to implement a programme for buttressing dangerous buildings within its boundaries. The Municipality has taken out a €5,550,000 loan for the project.

Recent studies have identified 160 dangerous buildings within the walled city of Nicosia, as well as in Pallouriotissa, Kaimakli and Agioi Omologites.

In accordance to the provisions of article 90 of the Municipalities Law, the Municipality will inform owners by letter that their building has been designated a public risk, and owners are required to immediately take corrective action (repair works) .

It is noted that where citizens do not comply within the prescribed deadline, the Municipality has the right, under the relevant legislation, to proceed with the necessary works and to subsequently bill the owner for any expenses.
