Metacities Joint Hackathon

Are you a Bachelor, Master or PhD student with an interest in digital technologies (e.g. electrical/computer engineering, economics/business management/marketing, environmental sciences department etc) in Greece, Cyprus or Bulgaria? Do you own or work for a start-up/mid-cap/ SME in the field of smart cities in these countries? Are you keen on working in an intercultural and interdisciplinary group to propose feasible solutions in challenging problems related to smart cities? Then consider applying for the METACITIES Joint Hackathon “Innovative technology-driven solutions for smart cities and Metacities: Shape the future of European Municipalities”!

We are looking for competitive teams that work on problem solving in the following smart and sustainable city aspects:

Smart Mobility
Smart buildings and Energy efficiency
Smart Urban Planning

The call is open to individual or team applicants (of max 4 persons from the same country) from the above-mentioned fields of study. METACITIES consortium offers you the unique opportunity to work in teams with foreign students by   allocating at least one participant from a different country in each team. You just need to tick the box on the application form that you accept to participate in an  intercultural team (if you are individual applicant) or that you accept foreign members to your team (if you apply as a team). Proposals/ solutions presented by intercultural teams will be rewarded with one extra point during the evaluation phase.

On the day of the online event teams will present their solutions in front of a judging committee of experts and claim prizes including a trip to the headquarters of selected METACITIES partners, to gain further insight into their operations.

How does it work?

- Apply here until October 13th, 2025. Choose either individual application or team application by adding the names and affiliations of your team members (up to 3 more)
- As soon as we receive all applications, individual applicants will be assigned to an intercultural team made up of students of at least 2 countries, while at least one foreign student will be assigned to already existing teams. Criteria of academic level (bachelor, Master, PhD) will be taken into account, so that we keep a balanced and fair representation in all competing teams
- In your team, you will work virtually from mid- October on the challenge/topic of your choice (among the three proposed topics) posed by METACITIES consortium and have until the end of November 2025 to prepare a short presentation of 4 minutes, a so-called pitch, with your solution to the proposed problem.
- Guidelines for your pitch presentation are provided on the attached document, while a more detailed description of possible problems to be solved and tips for a successful pitch presentation will be offered on a special Info Day organized by METACITIES consortium in late October.
- A mentor will be assigned per team to provide assistance during the working phase
- Present your pitch to a judging committee in an online meeting at the end of November 2025
- The judges decide on the winning teams.
- The team which will win the first prize will have the exclusive opportunity to get to know from the inside one of METACITIES organization in another country (travel and accommodation costs covered)
