H τελευταία δουλειά του παγκόσμιου χορογράφου Akram Khan και άλλες δυο πρεμιέρες στη 2η βδομάδα του Διεθνούς Φεστιβάλ Λευκωσίας

Το Διεθνές Φεστιβάλ Λευκωσίας αποτελεί τον επόμενο σταθμό στην παγκόσμια περιοδεία της τελευταίας δουλειάς του διεθνούς φήμης χορευτή και χορογράφου Akram Khan, “Outwitting the Devil”, με δύο παραστάσεις στις 26 και 27 Οκτωβρίου στις 8:30μμ. Βασισμένη στο Έπος του Γκίλγκαμες, ένα από τα παλαιότερα σωζόμενα κείμενα της παγκόσμιας λογοτεχνίας, η παράσταση εξετάζει το πώς ο άνθρωπος ανέκαθεν προσπαθούσε να ελέγξει τη φύση και πώς η φύση εκδικείται και καταστρέφει τελικά τον άνθρωπο.

Η 2η βδομάδα του Διεθνούς Φεστιβάλ Λευκωσίας περιλαμβάνει άλλες δύο Παγκύπριες πρεμιέρες: την πρώτη παρουσίαση του διεθνούς Κύπριου χορευτή-χορογράφου Μιχάλη Θεοφάνους με την παράσταση «Τειρεσίας» απόψε στις 8:30μμ αλλά και την νέα παραγωγή της Alpha Square «Οι πληγές του ανέμου» σε σκηνοθεσία Βαρνάβα Κυριαζή, στις 23 και 24 Οκτωβρίου στις 8:30μμ.

ΤΕΙΡΕΣΙΑΣ του Μιχάλη Θεοφάνους [50’] | 21 Οκτωβρίου

Μια εξερεύνηση της περίπλοκης φύσης του χαρακτήρα του Τειρεσία που συμβιβάζεται με την τύφλωση και τη σεξουαλικότητά του. Ένας διαλογισμός, σε μορφή χορού, για την αρχαιότητα και τον μοντερνισμό. Όπως ο μάντης είναι παρών στο αρχαίο παρελθόν, ο «Τειρεσίας» μετουσιώνεται στη σκηνή σε μια ρευστή κατάσταση μεταξύ πραγματικότητας και ψευδαίσθησης. Αναζητώντας τα σημάδια που θα αποκαλύψουν τελικά την προφητεία, ο καλλιτέχνης προσθέτει μια παρτιτούρα από ρυθμούς, που σέρνει και γδέρνει στην σκηνή. Το έργο αναπτύσσεται ως ένας οδηγός για τη διαδικασία, η οποία ξεκινά από το ζωώδες και το παράλογο και μεταφέρεται στο ανθρώπινο, όπου το παρελθόν και το μέλλον συναντώνται σε μια ανάκληση της δικής μας διάστασης.

ΟΙ ΠΛΗΓΕΣ ΤΟΥ ΑΝΕΜΟΥ του Χουάν Κάρλος Ρούμπιο [80’] | 23 & 24 Οκτωβρίου

Με την παραγωγή της Alpha Square ο Βαρνάβας Κυριαζής σκηνοθετεί τους Ανδρέα Αραούζο και Φώτη Αποστολίδη στο θεατρικό έργο του Χουάν Κάρλος Ρούμπιο που ο ίδιος αποκαλεί «το αγαπημένο μου έργο, εκείνο που αφιέρωσα στον πατέρα μου για όλα όσα δε γνωρίζω γι’ αυτόν. Ένα κείμενο… για την τύχη, για τις δικές μας αποφάσεις και ευθύνες και τους ανεκπλήρωτους έρωτες».

Στο έργο ένας νεαρός άντρας μετά το θάνατο του πατέρα του, βρίσκει ερωτικές επιστολές που υπογράφει ένας άλλος άντρας. Συγκλονισμένος από την ανακάλυψη, αποφασίζει να βρει τον υποτιθέμενο εραστή του πατέρα του και να αποκαλύψει την αλήθεια. Πρόκειται για ένα ανθρώπινο και συγκινητικό ντουέτο, που προτάθηκε για το Βραβείο Καλύτερου Θεατρικού Έργου (2005) από την Ένωση των Κριτικών Θεάματος της Νέας Υόρκης. Διερευνά ταυτότητες και αποκαλύπτει μυστικά που ανατρέπουν πρότυπα μιας βαθύτατα συντηρητικής κοινωνίας, η οποία επιβιώνει πίσω από το ψέμα που δημιουργεί την ίση και άνιση αντιμετώπιση. Καθρεφτίζει με ειρωνεία μια «πρόοδο» που μονάχα σε διακηρύξεις ανθρωπίνων δικαιωμάτων διαφαίνεται, μακριά από την αλήθεια των όσων καταπιέζονται εξαιτίας των πεποιθήσεων και των «πρέπει» των άλλων.

Μέσω μια σύνθεσης μεταξύ κλασικού και σύγχρονου, ο διεθνώς αναγνωρισμένος χορευτής και χορογράφος Akram Khan, εξετάζει αρχέγονα τελετουργικά και παραδόσεις, σε έναν συνεχώς μεταβαλλόμενο πλανήτη. Εμπνευσμένος από ένα νέο, προσφάτως ανακαλυφθέν κομμάτι του Έπους του Γκίλγκαμες, το νέο έργο του Khan φέρνει μαζί στη σκηνή μια εξαίρετη ομάδα έξι καλλιτεχνών διεθνούς εμβέλειας για να αποδώσουν ένα έπος για την τελετουργία και τη θύμηση. Σε ένα τοπίο από θρυμματισμένες πλάκες και πεσμένα είδωλα, οι έξι χαρακτήρες εμπορεύονται τον πλούτο και τις ιστορίες που τους απομένουν, αναζητώντας τη συμπλήρωση των κομματιών της αρχαίας γνώσης που χάνεται και ξεχνιέται με το πέρασμα του χρόνου. Το έργο μας καλεί σε ένα τραπέζι όπου η ζωή, ο θάνατος και οι μύθοι που θυμόμαστε αμυδρά είναι ο άρτος που μοιραζόμαστε.

New work by world dancer-choreographer Akram Khan and two more premiers in the 2nd week of the Nicosia International Festival

The Nicosia International Festival is the next stop in the world tour of the latest work by Akram Khan, “Outwitting the Devil”, with two performances on 26 and 27 October at 8:30pm. Inspired by a newly discovered fragment of the Babylonian Epic of Gilgamesh, one of the world’s earliest surviving great works of literature, the piece explores humanity's efforts to control and tame nature and how nature vengefully destroys humanity.

The second week of the Festival includes two more premiers: the first presentation in Cyprus of the piece “Tiresias” by Michalis Theofanous, an International Cypriot dancer-choreographer who has worked extensively with Bob Wilson and Dimitris Papaioannou, and the Cyprus premier of “Wounded by the Wind” by Juan Carlos Rubio, the new production by Alpha Square, directed by Varnavas Kyriazis, on 23, 24 October at 8:30pm.

TIRESIAS by Michalis Theophanous [50’] | 21 October

This allegorical project explores the complex nature of the mythical character of Tiresias as he reconciles with his blindness and his sexuality. As the foreseer of an ancient past in the present, “Tiresias” is summoned to the stage in a fluid state between reality and illusion. In searching for the signs that will finally reveal the prophecy, the performer adds his array of beats, dragging and scratching into the scene. His body transforms itself through different forms: ephemeral shapes that change endlessly as an evolving subject, searching in each new step for a renewed meaning, a new story for the inner self. «Tiresias» thus grows as our guide through a process that starts from the animal and the irrational, and later becomes properly human, where past and future meet in the recollection of our own actual dimension.

WOUNDED BY THE WIND by Juan Carlos Rubio [80’] | 23 & 24 October

«It’s my favourite play, and the one I dedicated to my father on account of everything I do not know about him. It is a text through which I wished to talk about fortune, our decisions and responsibilities and unfulfilled love», Juan Carlos Rubio

The death of his father obliges to David to take over his legacy. Among his father’s possessions, he finds love letters from another man. Puzzled by the discovery, he decides to visit the alleged lover of his father and find out the truth.

A profoundly human and moving duet, which was nominated for Best Play (2005) by the New York Drama Critics Circle, directed by Varnavas Kyriazis. The play investigates identities and reveals secrets, which disrupt the norms of a deeply conservative society that survives shielded behind the lies that maintain unequal treatment. It echoes, ironically, the «progress» that can only be found in human rights declarations, far from the reality of those who are suppressed under the principles and convictions of others.

Stirring classical and contemporary, internationally acclaimed dancer and choreographer Akram Khan explores our oldest rituals and traditions in the midst of our ever-changing planet. Inspired by a newly discovered fragment of the Babylonian Epic of Gilgamesh, one of the world’s earliest surviving great works of literature, Akram’s new work brings together a superb ensemble of six international artists to perform a concentrated epic about ritual and remembering. In a landscape of broken tablets and fallen idols, the six characters trade their remaining wealth and stories, seeking to make whole the fragments of ancient knowledge lost and forgotten over time. «Outwitting the Devil» invites us all to the table where life, death and our half-remembered myths are the bread we break together.
