Συνεχίζεται για 4η εβδομάδα στο Δημοτικό Θέατρο Λευκωσίας το Διεθνές Φεστιβάλ Λευκωσίας 2023, με την παράσταση σύγχρονου χορού «Never Twenty One» («Δεν θα γίνουν ποτέ 21»)  του Γαλλο-Μαλιανού Smail Kanouté και την εικαστική έκθεση από τον PASHIAS με τίτλο «Fresh Fish». Το πολύμηνο φεστιβάλ αποτελεί «το μεγαλύτερο  φεστιβάλ της Κύπρου και αυτό, δικαίως, μας κάνει περήφανους», δηλώνει η αντιπρόεδρος της Nicosia For Art (εταιρείας που συνδιοργανώνει το Φεστιβάλ με τον Δήμο Λευκωσίας) και μέλος της Επιτροπής του Φεστιβάλ κ. Λεώνη Ορφανίδου.

Αντηχώντας το hashtag #Never21 που γεννήθηκε από το κίνημα Black Lives Matter, το έργο του  Γαλλο-Μαλιανού χορογράφου και χορευτή Smail Kanouté αποτίει φόρο τιμής στα θύματα της ένοπλης βίας στη Νέα Υόρκη, το Ρίο και το Γιοχάνεσμπουργκ… τα οποία δεν θα γίνουν ποτέ 21 ετών.
 
Το «Never Twenty One» φέρνει στη σκηνή του Δημοτικού Θεάτρου Λευκωσίας ένα όραμα ανθρωπιάς, εμπνευσμένο από τη σπαρακτική πραγματικότητα της βίας που ευθύνεται για μια σειρά από αχρείαστους θανάτους νεαρών μαύρων αντρών. Το έργο αντανακλά τον αντίκτυπο της αποικιοκρατίας και του ρατσισμού και εξετάζει τις προγονικές τελετές ως τρόπο επιβεβαίωσης της ταυτότητας.
 
Οι τρεις χορευτές εκπέμπουν δύναμη, εκτελούν πολύ σωματικές, έντονες κινήσεις που έχουν τις ρίζες τους σε χορευτικά στιλ του δρόμου (krumping, popping), σε σύγχρονο κινησιολογικό λεξιλόγιο και στο baile funk και pasinho της Νότιας Αμερικής. Τα κορμιά τους είναι «ζωγραφισμένα» με φράσεις από μαρτυρίες των οικογένειών των θυμάτων και τα δεινά που έχουν υποστεί. Σαν περιπλανώμενα πνεύματα, μας μιλούν για αυτές τις κλεμμένες και διαλυμένες ζωές.

Λίγο πριν την παράσταση «Never Twenty One» εγκαινιάζεται η ατομική έκθεση του εικαστικού PASHIAS παρουσιάζει την ατομική έκθεση «Fresh Fish», στο πλαίσιο του παράλληλου προγράμματος του Φεστιβάλ. Η έκθεση αποτελεί εξέλιξη της ζωντανής περφόρμανς «Ω3» που πραγματοποιήθηκε στην Πλατεία Ελευθερίας τον περασμένο Μάιο, για τη σειρά δράσεων #acceptance του Φεστιβάλ.
 
Στην έκθεση «Fresh Fish» ο PASHIAS εξερευνά το «ανόμοιο» μέσα από μυθικές φιγούρες σε σύγχρονη απόδοση. Το σώμα του καλλιτέχνη - που παρουσιάζεται μισός άνθρωπος, μισός ψάρι - επαναλαμβάνεται, παίρνει σχήμα στην πολλαπλότητα για να αποδείξει τη μοναδικότητά του.

«NEVER TWENTY ONE» contemporary dance performance slapping racism in the face
 
The Nicosia 2023 International Festival continues for the 4th week at the Nicosia Municipal Theatre, with the contemporary dance performance "Never Twenty One" by the Franco-Malian Smail Kanouté and the art exhibition by PASHIAS entitled "Fresh Fish". The month-long festival is "the biggest festival in Cyprus and this, rightly, makes us proud", says the Vice President of Nicosia For Art (the company that co-organises the festival with the Municipality of Nicosia) and member of the Festival Committee, Mrs. Leoni Orphanidou.

Echoing the hashtag #Never21 coined by the Black Lives Matter movement, this contemporary dance production by French-Malian choreographer and dancer Smail Kanouté pays tribute to the victims of gun violence in New York, Rio and Johannesburg… who will never turn 21 years old.
 
“Never Twenty One” puts on the Nicosia Municipal Theatre stage a vision of humanity, inspired by the heartbreaking reality of the violence that has resulted in so many senseless deaths of young Black men. The piece reflects on the impact of colonialism and racism and examines the persistence with ancestral rites as a way of affirming identity.
 
The three powerful dancers, perform very physical, intense movements rooted in street styles (krumping, popping), contemporary dance idioms, and the baile funk and pasinho of South America. Their graffitied torsos are inscribed with testimonials from victims’ families and the evils they have suffered. Like wandering spirits, they tell us about these stolen and broken lives.

Just before the “Never Twenty One” performance, the festival shall host the opening of the exhibition by visual artist PASHIAS titled "Fresh Fish", as part of this year’s Parallel Program. The exhibition is an evolution of the live performance "Ω3" that took place at Eleftherias Square this past May, in the context of the #acceptance series organized by the Festival.
 
In the exhibition "Fresh Fish", explores the “uncommon” through mythical figures in a contemporary interpretation. The artist's body - half human, half fish - repeats itself, taking shape in multiplicity to prove its uniqueness. With references to frescoes of the Cycladic civilization, futuristic architectural structures, toy dolls and objects of everyday use or consumption, PASHIAS composes a cultural tableau of the society we all inhabit, the water we all swim in.
